AI in Gaming: How Artificial Intelligence is Shaping the Future

AI in gaming involves the implementation of artificial intelligence to create more responsive, adaptive, and challenging games. While some academics argue that game AI is not true AI, the technology has gained significant attention and become a major concept in many games. For instance, Cortana in Halo, after whom Microsoft named its virtual assistant, is just one example of AI in gaming. Other games like Detroit: Becoming Human also revolve around AI and androids.

However, AI in gaming goes beyond just creating games about artificial intelligence. This article aims to explore the many other aspects of AI in gaming beyond these popular examples.

What is the significance of AI in gaming?

The significance of AI in gaming lies in its ability to enhance the overall gaming experience for players. By implementing AI, games, and mobile gaming platforms can offer a more immersive experience to gamers by creating life-like situational developments that add excitement to the gameplay. The use of AI also allows for increased complexity in games, keeping players engaged and hooked. As gamers now expect an immersive experience across various devices, AI can help developers provide a console-like experience across all platforms.

NPCs

Non-player characters (NPCs) are the primary application of game AI. These characters, which behave intelligently as if they were controlled by human players, are guided by artificial intelligence algorithms and engines. NPCs' behavior is often determined by decision trees, which are used to direct their actions within the game.

Pathfinding

Pathfinding is a process that involves navigating from one point to another within a game world. The gaming landscape plays a crucial role in pathfinding, and game AI can generate it as players progress through the game. The AI can use feedback from players' moves, playing style, in-game decisions, appearance, and techniques to create a landscape that is tailored to their preferences and gameplay.

Decision Making

AI allows for player decisions to have a significant impact on gameplay. For instance, in Red Dead Redemption 2, NPCs' behavior and interactions with the player are influenced by variables such as blood stains on their clothes or the type of hat they are wearing. With an enormous matrix of possibilities, the entire game world can be manipulated by player decisions, resulting in complex cause-and-effect relationships

Data-mining

Through the use of artificial intelligence, game designers and studios can leverage data mining to gain insights into player behavior. This helps them understand how people engage with the game, which parts are most popular, and why users may stop playing. This data can inform game developers on how to improve gameplay or identify monetization opportunities.

Player experience modeling

Player experience modeling is a feature of game AI that enables the system to assess the player's ability and emotional state, and adjust the game accordingly. This may include dynamic game difficulty balancing, in which the difficulty of the game is adjusted in real-time based on the player's abilities. Additionally, AI in gaming can assist in determining the player's intent, further enhancing the player's experience.

Cheating

Cheating is a common technique utilized by NPCs in games, which involves using information that is not available to the players in a particular situation. For example, in a combat game, NPCs may possess human-like senses such as sight and hearing, but in reality, they may simply cheat by checking the player's position on the game engine. Other types of cheating may include granting NPCs greater speeds to catch up with players in racing games or allowing them to respawn in advantageous positions (such as higher ground) in first-person games.

Cheating is employed in certain games to enhance the difficulty level, as without it, human players could potentially beat the system after only a few attempts.

What are the kinds of AI in games?

Deterministic Ai Techniques

The most widely used AI techniques in gaming are deterministic techniques. These techniques involve specified and predictable behaviour or performance, without any element of uncertainty. They are quick and easy to implement, understand, test, and debug. However, these techniques require developers to anticipate all possible scenarios and code all the behaviour themselves. They do not allow for learning or evolution, which limits the game's play-life and makes its behaviours predictable after some gameplay.

Nondeterministic

Nondeterministic AI techniques are an alternative to deterministic techniques in gaming. They incorporate a level of uncertainty that depends on the AI method and its implementation. For instance, an NPC that learns and adapts to the moves and tactics of a player may use a neural network, Bayesian technique, or genetic algorithm. With these techniques, game developers need not anticipate every scenario or code behaviour accordingly. Instead, the methods can learn and extrapolate on their own, resulting in emergent behaviour that emerges without explicit instructions.

Advantages of Implementing AI in Gaming

  •  Enhanced realism and intelligence in games. AI techniques such as pattern learning and reinforcement learning allow NPCs to self-learn from their actions, evolving and responding to player actions in a more realistic manner. Additionally, programs can automatically create virtual worlds without the need for human interfaces.
  •  Cost and time savings in game development. Developing a game can be a time-consuming and costly process, with no guarantee of market acceptance. AI can significantly reduce development time and save resources.
  •  Improved gameplay experience for users. AI can make games more intuitive and user-friendly. It can also adapt the game's difficulty level in real-time to match the player's ability and expertise, making it easier for them to play.
  •  Elimination of predictability in games. Nondeterministic behavior used in AI can make games unpredictable, creating a unique and refreshing experience that increases the game's play-life. The developer cannot predict what will happen in the game, making it less boring and repetitive after multiple plays.

How will AI shape the future of the gaming industry?

The gaming industry has seen a rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) in game design and development, with no signs of slowing down. Here are the top five AI innovations that are likely to shape the future of the industry:

Cloud-Based Gaming with AI

Cloud gaming is an emerging technology that allows games to be streamed across the internet without the need for the user to download and install the game. While this technology has been in the works for years, it is not yet mainstream. However, with the integration of AI, cloud-based gaming is expected to provide a more immersive and personalized gaming experience.

Voice or Audio Recognition-Based Games

The use of audio recognition in gaming is transforming the gaming experience by enabling users to control game gestures, monitor controls, and sideline the role of a controller. This AI innovation has the potential to create more intuitive and user-friendly games.

Blockchain-Based Gaming

Blockchain-based gaming is another emerging trend that is gaining popularity. This approach requires gamers and developers to collaborate on a blockchain platform, where they can buy or own digital properties to be a part of the gaming community. This innovative concept has the potential to revolutionize the gaming industry by providing a secure and transparent gaming experience.

Improved Mobile Gaming Experience

Mobile gaming is an emerging trend that allows players to access an unlimited number of games with the convenience of their location. Phone companies are continuously developing devices compatible with high resolution and heavy graphics, providing users with an improved mobile gaming experience.

Wearable Support Gaming and VR Gaming

The advent of augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR) has elevated the standards of experiential games based on virtual and mixed reality, making them more realistic and progressive. Wearable devices like the Oculus Quest, which is an all-in-one PC-quality virtual reality device, provide an immersive and interactive gaming experience.
